What Is the Uniform MPJE?
The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) is developing a uniform version of the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE). This national law exam aims to evaluate a pharmacist’s core legal knowledge—federally and across participating jurisdictions—streamlining the licensure process and reducing multiple state-specific MPJEs
Why the Shift to a Uniform Exam?
- Adaptation to multi-state practice: With telehealth on the rise and pharmacist shortages in some regions, practitioners often need licensure across several states.
- Efficiency for candidates: Instead of multiple state law exams, one passing score from the uniform MPJE will suffice in participating states, saving time and cost
The Roadmap: Development Timeline
Timeline of key milestones:
- 2022: At the NABP Annual Meeting, member boards passed a resolution calling for a standardized MPJE.
- 2023: A steering committee assessed feasibility, finalized scope to include federal and shared state laws .
- Oct 2024: Practice analysis and content outline drafting, followed by a wide pharmacist survey to refine core topics.
- Apr 2025: Item Development Workshop refined exam items with legal experts and educator.
- Aug 2025: Uniform MPJE Review Committee will finalize content
Launch Date & Continuing Coexistence
- Official Launch: Expected in June 2026 .
- Dual Exam Options: Boards can continue using state-specific MPJEs or adopt the uniform version. Those who pass the uniform MPJE must still follow unique state laws not covered on the test
Benefits for Boards and Candidates
- For boards: Provides flexibility in licensure standards and supports multi-state reciprocity.
- For candidates: - Only one law exam to pass when seeking licensure across multiple jurisdictions.
- Reduced regulatory burden and cost.
- More efficient path to licensure
