UMPJE vs MPJE 2026: What's the Difference and Which Exam Do You Need?

The UMPJE launched April 1, 2026 and is already required in Arizona, Iowa, North Carolina, and Rhode Island. Here is exactly how it differs from the traditional MPJE and how to know which one applies to you.

⚡ Check Your State First

Before reading further: if you are seeking licensure in Arizona, Iowa, North Carolina, or Rhode Island, the traditional state MPJE is gone as of April 1, 2026. You must take the UMPJE. If you are in Florida, Maryland, Montana, Nebraska, or West Virginia, the UMPJE launches June 1, 2026. All other states currently still use the state-specific MPJE. See our full UMPJE guide for the complete state table.

The One-Sentence Answer

The MPJE tests one specific state's pharmacy laws. The UMPJE tests pharmacy law principles that are common across most states. If your state has transitioned, you take the UMPJE. If not, you take the state-specific MPJE.

Why the UMPJE Was Created

The traditional MPJE system required a pharmacist to take a separate, unique exam for every state they wanted to practice in. Moving from Texas to Ohio? Take the Ohio MPJE. Then want to add a New York license? Take the New York MPJE. Multiply this by the growing number of pharmacists practicing in multiple states (telehealth, regional chains, travel pharmacy), and the burden adds up fast.

The UMPJE solves this by creating a standardized exam testing pharmacy law principles that apply across most states. Pass the UMPJE once, and it can potentially satisfy the jurisprudence requirement in any participating state — without having to re-study state-specific content from scratch.

Content Differences: MPJE vs. UMPJE

Passing Score: Same Standard

Both the MPJE and UMPJE use a passing scaled score of 75. This is not a percentage of questions correct — it is a scaled score that accounts for question difficulty, consistent with NABP's standard across all pharmacy licensure exams.

Does My Old MPJE Score Transfer?

If you passed the state-specific MPJE for a state before that state transitioned to the UMPJE, you do not need to retake the exam for that state. Your existing passing result is honored. This applies to both new licensure and license transfers — if you already have a valid license based on a passing MPJE result, you are not affected by the transition.

However, if you are seeking new licensure in a state that has transitioned to the UMPJE, and you have not yet taken the MPJE for that state, you must take the UMPJE.

Study Strategy: MPJE vs. UMPJE

The good news for UMPJE candidates: the federal law foundation is identical. Everything in our MPJE Study Guide on the CSA, HIPAA, FDCA, OBRA '90, DQSA, PPPA, and CMEA applies directly to UMPJE preparation. Week 1 of your MPJE study plan maps perfectly to UMPJE preparation.

The difference is Week 2. For the traditional MPJE, Week 2 is state-specific statutes. For the UMPJE, Week 2 should focus on universal state law principles — generic substitution laws, pharmacist immunization authority, naloxone access laws, collaborative practice agreements, and PDMP consultation obligations as they apply across most states. Think "what do most states do?" rather than "what does my one state do?"

📌 Key Takeaway

If you are well-prepared for the MPJE (especially the federal law component), you are already well-prepared for the UMPJE. The UMPJE is not a completely new exam — it is a re-scoped version that removes state-specific local content and deepens the universal legal principles.

Which Exam Should You Take?

Simple decision tree:

  • Is your state listed as a UMPJE adopter? → Take the UMPJE. Check our UMPJE state table for your state's effective date.
  • Is your state still using the state-specific MPJE? → Take the state MPJE. Use our state-specific MPJE guides.
  • Are you in California? → Take the CPJE (California Pharmacy Jurisprudence Exam) — California does not use NABP's MPJE or UMPJE.
  • Are you in Arkansas or Nevada? → Take your state's own board exam.
  • Unsure? → Contact your state Board of Pharmacy directly before registering. Transition timelines can change.
